Music Library Summary
#951 - #959

Finally...My Music Library for 2018 is on the books. Not only is this the latest start of any year (not counting 1982 when the first entry happened in September), it is now the longest hiatus between entries. This record was shattered. Just a few days shy of six months!, not counting the January 9, 2018 appearance of my Best of 2017. That works out to 179 days. I took so long in between, that it took me twice as long to compile these 9 new adds, as I was rather "rusty" doing the whole thing. Found what I thought was an error concerning the numbers for Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark, but after 90 minutes of going through it all, everything was fine. With this late start, it also means that the next entries will be happening in just a few weeks. Most likely the 2nd week of June. I would expect about the same number of entries at that time.

Pam Chapman, who has been the love of my life, and my spouse for close to 38 years, has a new moniker, Mertonia. She, like Bill Nelson has had plenty of great product, and as shown on the Top 200 Artist list, with 14 new additions, Mertonia now has 38 total tracks, and has vaulted from #173 to #111, just above The Chameleons, and behind Loreena McKennitt, who makes her first appearance in over a decade, with "A Hundred Wishes" from her new album Lost Souls. The name Mertonia, comes from Thomas Merton (1915-1968), a Trappist monk of the Abbey of Gethsemani, Kentucky, who was a poet, social activist, and student of comparative religion. Merton wrote more than 70 books, mostly on spirituality, social justice and a quiet pacifism, as well as scores of essays and reviews. Among Merton's most enduring works is his bestselling autobiography The Seven Storey Mountain (1948), which sent scores of World War II veterans, students, and even teenagers flocking to monasteries across the US. It goes without saying that points accumulated last year by Pam Chapman, are combined with Mertonia, and there will be more great tunes to come in June. Another fact, my Music Library was born September 24, 1982, just over six weeks after we took or vows in a lovely forest.

Behind Mertonia is Moby, whose 11 new songs moves the producer/musician past Delerium, to place at #6 on the Top Artist list. The new music is taken from Everything Was Beautiful, and Nothing Hurt, his fifteenth studio album. It was released on March 2, 2018, through record labels Little Idiot and Mute. The title of the album is a reference to Billy Pilgrim's epitaph in Kurt Vonnegut's 1969 novel Slaughterhouse-Five. Not surprisingly, Moby's new album never charted in the U.S., except briefly on the electronic/dance chart.

There was plenty of artists appearing for the first time, in fact, 20 in all. Without much detail, they include: G-Eazy (yes, one of 5 recent Top 20 hits to show up, others include Dua Lipa, Kendrick Lamar & SZA and Imagine Dragons. Moving on..Les Rita Mitsouko & The Sparks, Cosmic Child, Alon Mor, Opus v84, Lo Moon, Tom Rogerson with Brian Eno (counted as a separate artist from Brian Eno, according to my rules, however, Brian Eno does appear with an edit of "Kazakhstan," taken from his latest album, Music For Installations. Other acts making their debut include Taphephobia, JB Dunckel (1/2 of the band Air), Mount Eerie, Cities On Fire, Venetian Snares & Daniel Lanois (more on them later), Laura Veirs, with Sufjan Stevens helping out on "Watch Fire" (ML #959), Scarlet Dorn, Manchester Orchestra, and yes, Justin Timberlake joins the fold with "Filthy."

More chart info, two acts accumulate enough points to debut on the Top 200 Artist list. Last year's top new artist Spunkshine, enters at #169, based on visiting material from his back catalogue. Close behind is Daughter at #173. Daughter are an indie folk band from England. Fronted by North London native Elena Tonra, they were formed in 2010 after the addition of Swiss-born guitarist Igor Haefeli and drummer Remi Aguilella from France. Dropping off is Onetwo, a synthpop duo formed in 2000 by singer Claudia Brücken (Propaganda) and keyboardist/singer Paul Humphreys (Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark). Their collaboration had no name until 2004, they won't return, and Rameses B, an English electronic music producer. Still active, he will most likely appear again.

Quick bits: Sigur Ros. the Icelandic avant-rock band from Reykjavík, who have been active since 1994, yields three tracks with the annoying titles similar to this, "6530'17.9"N 1837'01.3"W.", culled from the soundtrack to Route One, which in its full form, is 24 hours long. Tracey Thorn has her first electronic/dance oriented album, simply called Record, and I haven't found a failed song on it yet. Thorn moves up to #126. Moby passes the 2,000 point mark. Shriekback return with "And The Rain," from their upcoming album Why Anything? Why This", not to be confused with Jean-Michel Jarre's 2016 song, "Why This, Why That And Why" (feat. Yello). Because of activity on the chart above Shriekback, the band actually drops three notches to #133, even with an additional 13 points. Finally Venetian Snares x Daniel Lanois (the actual moniker), have teamed up for a self-titled new album. Aaron Funk, known as Venetian Snares, like Lanois, is a Canadian electronic musician based in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He is widely known for innovating and popularizing the breakcore genre, and is one of the most recognizable artists to be signed into Planet Mu, an experimental electronic music label. His signature style involves meticulously complex melodies, eclectic use of samples, and odd time signatures. Of course Lanois is no stranger to my Music Library. He stands at #61 on the Artist List. His collaboration with Aaron Funk is counted as a separate act.

As mentioned earlier, there won't be another six months for my next entries. That was an anomaly. Look for more adds in the next three to four weeks. Check above this summary for all 157 tracks that were added...
